Your previous work experience is the most important part of your resume, so put it near the top, directly after your contact details.
Always make changes to your resume based on the individual job you are applying for, so that the content matches the specific skills requested by the employer.
Instead of creating a long list with all your qualities (e.g., disciplined, creative, problem solver) try to connect them with real life and work experiences.
Emphasise what you have achieved within a role, how you added value or made a difference to a company.
Be honest. It is far more beneficial to you to make the most out of what you’ve got, rather than to invent skills or experience.
Avoid mentioning hobbies. Unless they are directly related to the job requirements, they are useless to the prospective employer.
Use bullet points and short sentences.
Use an 11 or 12 point font.
2-3 A4 pages is the ideal length.
Use formal language and avoid slang or abbreviations.
When sending a resume, application or email, please do not list an inappropriate or unprofessional email address.
Recommended resume structure:
- > Personal details
- > Employment history, starting with your most recent job
- > Education and training, starting with your most recent studies
- > Skills and abilities
- > Career objectives (optional)
- > Referees
